Suggestions for the future direction of family strengths research will be offered in the final chapter. There appear to be two elements essential to a viable definition of family strengths. First, there are some things that would be defined as strengths in any family context, such as "good" communication, affectional bonds, concern for the well-being of family members, and so forth. Second, and I would argue more important, that strengths are best viewed in light of the experiences or potential stressors that families are likely to face.
