In Chapters 4 through 10, we will explore the presence of racism as a Component A element in the lives of black corporate managers and their families. We will also look at identifying sources of strength that include traditional black family strengths, which would be included in Component B. 1). In the next section, we will turn our attention to family strengths.

The sizable number of professional books and journal articles published recently, particularly since 1980, illustrate the growing interest among scholars in this relatively new focus on family strengths (see Berretta, 1982; Hurd, 1995; Litdejohn-Blake & Darling, 1 9 9 3 ; Olson & McCubbin, 1 9 8 3 , 1989; Ronnau, 1 9 9 3 ; Stinnett, 1980, 1 9 8 1 , 1 9 8 3 ; 28 B L A C K F A M I L I E S IN C O R P O R A T E AMERICA Vance, 1989; Walsh, 1982). Indeed, we can say that the issue of family strengths is a central concern within the field of family social science.

Suggestions for the future direction of family strengths research will be offered in the final chapter. There appear to be two elements essential to a viable definition of family strengths. First, there are some things that would be defined as strengths in any family context, such as "good" communication, affectional bonds, concern for the well-being of family members, and so forth. Second, and I would argue more important, that strengths are best viewed in light of the experiences or potential stressors that families are likely to face.
