The work by Yang and He (2008) is primary research for the neuroprotective effect of sinapine. They established the neuroprotective effects of sinapine against Na2S2O4-induced toxicity of PC12 cells. The results showed that pretreatment with sinapine significantly reduced the cell death of PC12 cells. The sinapine reduced the apoptotic rate, LDH release, the lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization.

The substrate, that is, the oxidizable compound, is usually a lipid, but can also be a protein, DNA, or carbohydrate. In the case of lipid oxidation, the main mechanism of antioxidants is to act as radical chain-breakers. Another mechanism is to act as preventive antioxidant oxygen scavenging or blocking the pro-oxidant effects by binding proteins that contain catalytic metal sites (Frankel and Meyer, 2000). Several studies have shown that phenolic compounds have antioxidant properties. According to Wanasundara and Shahidi (1994), most powerful antioxidative component of rapeseed meal is glucosyl sinapate, the glucose ester of sinapic acid.
