Because male magpies are larger and more aggressive than females they are much more capable of defending a territory alone than females are. In our study we recorded male replacement twice and female replacement eight times. The latter involved birds from the non-breeding flock replacing dead or injured territory owners, but other replacements included female breeders which divorced in order to re-pair. 025).
