These guidelines (Fig. 2) and a set of heuristics that are described later (Figs. 5b) are developed as rationalisations of ideas previously introduced by Jacob Nielsen [2]. The heuristics also absorb salient aspects of the ideas put forward by Muller et al. [3] (which were introduced at that time to enhance coverage of ‘user process orientation’). The development of the ideas benefits from reading the work of Steve Krug [1], Jared Spool [5], and John Cato [4], amongst others in this area. The ‘straight usability’ guidelines are split into four sections, grouping them into those that relate to • • • • Content assimilation – the nature of understanding (or otherwise) of what is available and presented on the webages; Navigation – the ease with which the website user is comfortable with and clear about the website structure and locating items of interest; Audience awareness – considerations of the human elements of website design and use (the demands, interactions, and idiosyncrasies); Process – a focus here on the importance of testing and planning for usability as part of the wider project approach.

In the light of this information, the tasks of establishing the usability and the aesthetic design requirements are carried out jointly (as part of the same step of the BWD process). Towards the end of the project life cycle, all three aspects (usability, aesthetics, and purpose) are tested together in the same project step (Step 11). Heuristics Usability heuristics can be regarded as ‘rules of thumb’ notions that can be used as a basis for usability evaluation of a design. The suggestions made in Figs.

Write out the list of BWD steps and make estimates of the percentage of project time that you think typically might be spent on each step. Case Study 1. For your case study website, what ‘skills help’ do you envisage needing to make sure your website will be totally effective and appropriate? 2. , how will the need for flashbacks (at R&R stages) be decided, and what criteria will be used to decide that the project has reached completion.
